Getting to Penang

By Air

Penang is easily accessible by air with daily flights from major capitals of the region. Penang International Airport is located about 20kms from Georgetown. This airport is a modern facility offering daily scheduled flights to and from a large number of Malaysian and Asian destinations.
From Penang International Airport, you can either take taxis or buses to reach any point on the island. Bus services, operating at 1-hour intervals from 6:00am-10:00pm, run between the airport and Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay) in Georgetown. Meanwhile, you can get taxis services anytime, taxis

By Train

Train ride from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth will takes about 6 hours. First and second class passengers travel in the air-conditioned coaches. Taking the train is a comfortable way to travel within the country and it gives travellers the opportunity to see a lot of the countryside. From Butterworth, you can ride a taxi across the Penang Bridge or took the Ferry to Penang island.

By Bus

A lot of modern and comfortable express bus companies offer connections between Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown in Penang. The whole journey will takes about 4-5 hours. All the express buses will stop at new bus terminal in Penang which called "Terminal bass Expres Sungai Nibong." This bus terminal is located at Sungai Nibong and it was opened on May 2005.
You can easily get a taxi services to your destination you want from "Terminal bass Expres Sungai Nibong". City Buses will also take you to the centre of Georgetown, Komtar from this terminal bus express. Buses are leaving regularly from Sungai Nibong everyday.

By Car

If you drive to Penang from southern part of Malaysia, get onto the North-South Expressway heading north. Get onto the Penang Bridge, this bridge is connecting the mainland of Peninsular Malaysia to Penang Island, the tol fee charges for cars was RM 7 ( updated 11/11/2007 ), then head for Georgetown, but no payment is needed when you travelling from the island to the mainland. Alternatively, you can drive to the ferry terminal at Butterworth and take the ferry across to Georgetown, it will take you about 15 minute trip each way. The ferry service is available from 05:30 to 23:30 for both passengers and vehicles ( updated 11/11/2007 ).
